Johannesburg Executive Mayor Mpho Parks Tau touched on some of the pressing issues during his State of the City Address in Braamfontein on 6 May.

Mayor Tau captivated the audience when he announced that they have pushed basic service delivery to higher standards.

Mayor Tau said the City will now be tackling the issue of unemployment hands-on, with the launch of a new initiative, Vulindlel’ eJozi programme.

The programme will create job opportunities for 200 000 individuals by 2016.

“The programme will enable them to enter work, education and training as well as improve their economic participation potential, step-by-step,” he said.

According to the mayor, the programme will begin with screening assessment and advisory services for all candidates.

He also said one of the pathways available to the youth through Vulindlel’ eJozi is Jozi@work programme.

“We announced the rollout last year and we are pleased to report it has now moved into full implementation.”

Speaking at the Metro Centre, Mayor Tau received a round of applause when he announced that they are in the process of blanketing Braamfontein with Wifi that provides high-speed broadband access.

“In this mecca of youthful activity, the Wifi mesh will become a showcase for how subsidised access to internet means access to

“We have over the course of this term, delivered 12 500 housing units for the underprivileged,” he concluded.
