Remembering Hani: 22 years on

JOBURG — South Africa remembers struggle hero, Chris Hani.

It has been 23 years to the day that struggle hero Chris Hani was assassinated outside his home on 10 April.

Hani was an active member of the struggle movement, joining the ANC youth league at the age of 15. He was part of a number of protests against Bantu education. In the ’80s, he was appointed as the head of Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the nation) where he was responsible for suppression of the mutiny by dissident anti-communist ANC members in detention camps. In 1990, Hani took over from Joe Slovo as the leader of the South African Communist Party.

There have been a number of conspiracy theories around Hani’s death, however, a final report at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission said it was unable to find evidence that the two murderers convicted of Hani’s death, took orders from international groups.

President Jacob Zuma officially unveiled the Hani memorial on 10 April 2014 in Boksburg.
