Freshlyground: Three exclusive Barnyard shows

CRESTA – Freshlyground are on their way to Gauteng for three exclusive events in Pretoria and Johannesburg.

Freslyground will grace Cresta Barnyard theatre with performances from their albums on 31 March at 8pm.

Freshlyground formed in early 2002, is made up of seven talented and diverse musicians from South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Fronted by the diminutive but dynamic Zolani Mahola, the band exudes a live performance energy that has been the bedrock of their success.

“I love the Barnyard. We do well in theatre because there is more time to perform,” said Mahola.

The experienced rhythm section of Peter Cohen (drums) and Josh Hawks (bass) is complimented by guitarist Julio Sigauque, keyboardist Seredeal Scheepers, Simon Attwell (flute, mbira, sax and harmonica) and violinist Kyla Rose Smith.

Although hailing from diverse backgrounds, they weave musical magic that is highly infectious and undeniably groovy.

“For our Barnyard shows, people should expect care being taken in our acts. We will share what we have been up to, sing our old songs from our old albums and even our new songs we will be releasing,” she said.

In 2003, Freshlyground launched their debut album Jika Jika under their own Freeground Records label. The immediate success of which firmly cemented the band as one of South Africa’s most successful young acts.

Mahola said the band is working on new material, but could not confirm if they would be recording an album.

The Barnyard show will be 1 hour 30 minutes long.

“We don’t often do shows in Gauteng. These Barnyard shows would be exclusive so we can bring our world over to Gauteng. The first show would be great if people can bring their children because it would be fun,” concluded Mahola.
