VIDEO and GALLERY: Community concerns brought before Linden Police

LINDEN – The South African Communist Party marched to Linden Police Station to highlight the community's concerns.

Highlighting the various frustrations the community of Linden have, the South African Communist Party (SACP) Linda Jabane District marched from the Windsor East Recreation Centre to the Linden Police Station on 9 March.

“The march needed to be done because the police services are not doing what they are supposed to be doing, which is serving the community. The response is too slow sometimes and we have found that on one occasion, a community member was not given a case number,” said SACP’ s chairperson Vhonani Masindi.

Member of the SACP Moeti Moalosi said for him it was imperative that this march took place because the issue of drugs in the area is a big one.

Masindi handed over a memorandum to the Linden Police Station Commander Colonel Mabalana Mohale.

The memorandum contained concerns that the community has as well as demanded that need to be met by the SAPS according to the SACP.

The following were demanded by the SACP:

• An improved police service regarding domestic violence, other sorts of abuse and rape cases in our communities.

• The overall improvement in police services in and around this area to the effective reduction in crime rate, drug trafficking and drug abuse.

• Transparency and community involvement in deployment of both logistical and human resources based on demographics and expertise.

• A review on all drug-related cases that have been struck off the roll and the review must be done by an independent body.

• Tougher measures on police officials who are found guilty of corruption/collusion with criminals.

Colonel Mohale agreed to address the concerns highlighted by signing the memorandum as requested by Masindi.

“I am glad that the march went smoothly, the station will deal with the demands from the SACP,” said Colonel Mohale.

Masindi concluded, “We are confident that this march will bring about changes, we will roll out different marches in different areas. The next march we are planning on doing is one to address the state of public schools.”
