Brixton cop shot at Kingston Frost Park

BRIXTON – Police are investigating an attempted murder case after a K9 Unit member was shot while on duty.

The K9 Unit member who was shot by an unconfirmed assailant on 14 January is being treated at Milpark Hospital.

Brixton Police Station’s Captain Doniah Mothutsane confirmed that the 35-year-old sergeant was short in the hand while attending to a robbery at the Kingston Frost Park.

“It’s alleged that the member was driving along the street and came across an armed robbery in progress. He stopped and ran after the suspects, they shot at [him],” said Mothusane

Police subsequently launched a manhunt, with a heavy presence of Metro Police and police vehicles, as well as the Johannesburg Flying Squad.

The suspects, however, are reportedly still at large.

“No one has been arrested yet, police are investigating attempted murder,” she added.

Brixton resident Yvonne Jacobs said the park is becoming more violent, and has raised concern among residents.

“We see a lot of individuals who spend time in the park, just sitting and observing the comings and goings of everyone in the are. Once we inform the authorities of these suspicious individuals, they tend to only disappear for a while. We really want to have the park safe again,” Jacobs added.
