UJ Metropolitan Academy celebrates two decades of a 100 per cent matric pass rate.

CROSBY – THe UJ Metroplitan Academy continues with its 100 per cent matric pass rate streak.

The class of 2014 of the affiliated high school to the University of Johannesburg (UJ), UJ Metropolitan Academy, produced a 100 per cent pass rate with the release of the national and provincial Grade 12 results by the Minister of Basic Education, Angie Motshekga.

This is the 20th year a 100 per cent pass rate was obtained since the school’s inception in 1992.

“The class of 2014 did itself proud with 94.4 per cent of the class passing at the level required for entry to bachelor’s degree studies, and 5.6 per cent obtained diploma endorsement, which means that all pupils qualify to study at tertiary level,” said UJ media liaison Herman Esterhuizen.

A total of 126 distinctions are among the reaped fruits.

“One of the pupils achieved eight distinctions, three six distinctions and three pupils obtained five distinctions. Six of the pupils achieved four distinctions. A further nine pupils obtained three distinctions, 10 obtained two distinctions and 14 obtained one distinction,” he added.

Professor Sarah Gravett, executive dean of the Faculty of Education at the University said, “The success of the school can be contributed to strong and visionary leadership and committed teachers who care deeply about the academic and personal wellbeing of the pupils.”

The Faculty serves as the school’s custodian.

In 2013, the university’s council honoured Marietta Westerberg, the school principal, with the prestigious Ellen Kuzwayo Award, for her sustained exemplary leadership in providing excellent education to children from disadvantaged communities at the academy.
