Smash-and-grabs rife on Beyers Naudé Drive

EMMARENTIA – The Beyers Naudé Drive and Judith Road intersection has become a hotspot for smash-and-grabbers. Be alert.

The notorious silly season is in full swing, and many have already fallen victim to criminals’ scavenging ways.

Over the past few weeks, smash-and-grab incidents have been reported along Beyers Naudé Drive/ Main Road, with the Judith Road intersection in Emmarentia proving to be quite a hotspot.

Urban inspector for Ward 87 and 88 Philip Miya said he received a plea from Parkview Police Station Commander Nanda Moodley regarding smash-and-grabs at this particular intersection.

“After breaking into stationary vehicles at this location, these culprits use openings on the perimeter fence (Melville Koppies) to make their getaway,” Miya said. Car owners are put in a more vulnerable position with the street lights constantly out.

Ward 69 councillor Katja Naumann was also victimised.

“On 14 October I was the victim of a smash-and-grab at the corner of Beyers Naudé Drive and Judith Road, and, a few minutes later, an attempted hijacking at the next light at the corner of Thomas Bowler and Beyers Naudé Drive,” said Naumann.

“One suspect was apprehended by the Westdene Community Patrol group and CSS,” she added.

“I would like to urge any residents who have been victims of a smash-and-grab at this intersection to report the matter to the Parkview Police so that the detectives can create a water-tight case. I would like to thank both CSS and the Westdene Community Patrollers for their prompt action and assistance and for really going out of their way for me. Your help and reassurance was amazing.”

Moodley said Parkview Police monitor the area whenever resources are available.

“We have set up a task team for specific days between 6pm and 7pm,” he said.

“It‘s quite dark on that road after 6pm and high mast lights should be erected to reduce the risk. Before then, we are doing what we can by deploying people to that area,” Moodley added.

Moodley also advised motorists to shy away from being too relaxed over the festive season and rather be street smart.

As the silly season commences, be sure to remain alert and never put valuables in plain sight while driving.
