Graduates reap the fruits of their labour

NORTHCLIFF – Flower Foundation Retirement Homes hosted their graduation ceremony on 11 November.

Hard work and dedication was commended at the Flower Foundation Retirement Homes’ graduation ceremony, which was held on 11 November at Northcliff’s Elm Park Retirement Village. The home, which is under the directorship of Flower Foundation CEO Cedric Mckie, has sponsored 15 young people to train as caregivers.

The graduates were celebrated for completing the Ancillary Health Care Workers course, which is Health and Welfare SETA and South African Qualifications Authority approved.

“The free six-month course caters for previously unemployed and disadvantaged people who enjoy giving back their time and skills to the community,” said Sister Heather Withers of the Flower Foundation. Withers has been involved in training caregivers since 2008, and is now retiring from the home.

“I have grown to love each individual that has been part of our programme… whenever I see them do good things, I rejoice,” said Withers.

Mckie also acknowleged the graduates with gratitude.

He hailed the programme as one of the best in uplifting individuals. “This programme is the upliftment of important skills to our organisation… Thank you to everyone who has been part of this programme.

“Department of Social Development’s Regional B manager Lerato Legobane also praised the graduates for their hard work.

“We like to empower individuals from disadvantaged families and the destitute. And we as the City of Joburg are making an impact on the lives of communities,” she said.

In honouring the memory of her late mother, Belinda Magau sponsored a trophy for the graduates and also sponsored small cups for the top three students.

Speaking at the ceremony, Withers explained that Magau was motivated by seeing how essential good caregivers are for the frail and vulnerable, and decided to contribute to the graduates.

Hellen Nyalenda, who was recognised as the top achiever for theory and practicals, was overjoyed with her achievement.

“I am so happy, when I grew up I always wanted to become a social worker, however, I realised that my passion lies in people who desperately need help, and I knew that I need to do nursing,” said Nyalenda.

The next programme will commence in March 2015.
