Meet ‘Beauty and the Beast’s’ Sarah Malherbe

Linden - Meet the talented faces masqueraded as Beauty and the Best in the theater production.

Linden’s Sarah Malherbe is currently playing the role of Belle in the Peoples Theatre production of Beauty and the Beast junior at the Joburg theatre.

The singer, dancer and actor has been in the arts from her childhood days. She always participated in school plays, musicals and eisteddfods.

According to Malherbe, the most interesting part of being a theatre performer is that the performer has the opportunity to be a different person every time they perform.

“Every experience is different and every new show comes with its own set of challenges and rewards. I have chosen a career where it is impossible to be bored,” she said.

With the zeal to craft her skills, Malherbe went to university and completed a Diploma in Musical Theatre at the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) in Pretoria last year.

“I’m a real ‘newbie’ to the industry but I was lucky enough to be one of the nuns in The Sound of Music at Montecasino earlier this year.

Other than that I have danced at Gold Reef City and I played the role of Elle Woods at the Breytenbach Theatre in Pretoria last year in a TUT production of Legally Blonde.”

She hopes to get her feet deeper into the South African musical theatre industry within the next five years.

“I have so much to learn and I’m eager to be involved in anything and everything. I’m a big believer in gaining something from every experience.”

Malherbe has a supportive family to thank for her success.

“My mom is also unbelievably supportive. She just gets it. It’s a very up-and-down industry and she always seems to know what to say to get me through.”

It’s not all fun and glamorous to be in such an industry.

“It’s a tough industry with lots of competition and a lot of heartache and it’s easy to feel like you are drowning in it. For me, the most important thing is to constantly remind myself of why I embarked on this journey in the first place – a deep love for performing that will never leave me.”

This production of Beauty and the Beast started on 3 November and is set to end on 24 December.
