Give a home, gain a friend

METRO – You've been meaning to look around for a four-legged member to make part of your family, look no further than the JSPCA.

If you are an animal lover of note and need a four-legged friend, the Johannesburg SPCA has some cute surprises waiting for you in its kennels.

“Our Kennels Department actively promotes adoptions of animals in our care. We consult with prospective owners on the needs and resources of the family so as to provide a near-perfect match in the pet they adopt,” said public relations officer Jolene Beyleveld.

The JSPCA encourages interested candidates to visit its Animal Adoption Centre to see all the dogs, cats and farm animals looking for a place to call home.

“A meet-and-greet area allows you to interact with the pet and to ensure that you make the correct decision,” Beyleveld informed.

The following factors play a role in the adoption process:

  • Available time to spend with the animals
  • Available space
  • What are your expectations of the animal
  • Affordability

“Once you have chosen the correct pet for you and your family, JSPCA inspectors will make arrangements to come to your property to ensure that your property is suitable for the type of animal you have chosen. The inspector will also be able to answer any further questions you have about looking after your new pet.”

For R450, your new dog is sterilised, vaccinated, de-wormed, microchipped and receives a collar and tag before leaving the SPCA.

“Post-home inspections are carried out randomly to ensure the well-being of the animal. If you feel that your new pet does not settle in and you feel that you are not compatible, please ensure that you return the animal to the JSPCA.”
