Cosatu to campaign for the sacked ‘Generations’ actors

JOBURG - Cosatu calls for a week long boycot of the SABC's 'Generations'

Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) and Creative Workers of South Africa agreed to take things a notch up by fighting for the 16 sacked Generations actors.

Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi announced on 9 September that they are willing to take the campaign to a new level and proposed to viewers not to watch the local soap opera on SABC 1 between 8pm and 8:30pm for the whole week starting from 15 September.

“What you cannot win through negotiation you have to win on the streets,” said the determined Vavi.

The actors of the popular soapie went on strike, demanding better salaries and working conditions. They were sacked on 18 August after ignoring demands to report for duty. Last month, many of the actors announced at a press conference that their rights had been violated.

Meanwhile, the creator and executive producer of the soapie Mfundi Vundla refuses to take back the 16 actors.
