A Fairland policeman was recently arrested after a robbery in Rosettenville.

On 25 August just before 3am, he and two other accomplices kicked down the door of a house in Rosettenville. The trio identified themselves as police to the victim. They assaulted him, tied both of his hands with a plastic, and also used electric objects to choke him.

Begging for his life and seeking a way of surviving this ordeal, the victim screamed and two of his attackers fled the scene in a Mercedes Benz and a Kia Picanto.

Still perplexed by what had occurred, the victim got up on his feet in an effort to get help and catch his perpetrators who put him through what he thought was his demise.

Luckily, he saw Metro Police officers who were patrolling the area and they came to his rescue. One of the suspects failed to get inside the getaway car and was left behind.

The Metro officers chased the suspect; the suspect drew a fire-arm and pointed at the officers, forcing the Metro officer to shoot the suspect.

The suspect used a Z88 firearm which is a police-issued firearm. A police appointment certificate was also found on the scene of the shooting. The suspect was taken to Moffatview Police Station where it was discovered that he was a Fairland Police Station employee.

The member is at Sun City Prison awaiting trial.

“He was just a policeman doing his job, never suspected that he would do such a thing,” commented Fairland Police Station spokesperson Michael Kagtla.

The Gauteng South African Police Services (SAPS) refused to comment on this matter stating that “SAPS is investigating the matter, we won’t be able to divulge the information pertaining to this member as he is being investigated.”

The house-owner alleges that a plasma television, Sansui and Blackberry cellphones and R49 000 were stolen from the scene.

Last year, the South African Police Service revealed that an audit of the police’s ranks had found that 8 846 criminal charges were pending against police and there were 1 448 serving police officers convicted of serious crimes, according to a report by Africa Check.
