AUCKLAND PARK- UJ to start a competition to raise money for three orphanages in time for Mandela day 2015.

In 2013 the School of Tourism and Hospitality was awarded for the best Community Engagement Project in the University of Johannesburg. We strive not only to deliver an extended hand to our communities but to make sure we embed an awareness within our students to become active, responsible citizens in the future.

In 2015 we would like not only our school, or the Management Faculty, but the entire university to take part in our new project:

The school of Tourism and Hospitality is launching a competition where students, staff, parents and the extended families can take part in. They require people to knit or crochet a blanket and enter this into a competition. The blankets will subsequently be displayed next year, prior to Mandela Day where an overall winner will be chosen. Seven blankets will go forward to be short listed, and these will then be auctioned and the winner announced. Money raised at this event will be used to supplement meals for three non-profit organisations on Mandela Day.

The aim is to get the following number of blankets entered into this competition:

  • 67 Blankets from the School of Tourism and Hospitality
  • 667 Blankets from the Management Faculty and
  • 6 667 Blankets from the rest of the university
  • 7401 is the final aim

The NGOs to benefit are: Tshpang Children’s Orphanage, Hospice and Rehab Centre and Reach Out and Touch.

Residents are yet to be informed about how to enter this competition.
