Alcohol thieves nabbed

FAIRLAND - High-speed car chase comes to an end after getaway vehicle collides with traffic.

They pretended to be a couple shopping for alcohol at Tops Spar in Fairland, but shop owner Harry Kyprighibes quickly realised that they had not paid for the alcohol they took from his store.

“As they walked out, I noticed that they had stuffed bottles of whisky into a backpack,” Kyprighibes told Northsider.

The male suspect threatened Kyprighibes with a screwdriver and the female suspect struck him in the face with a tin when he confronted the pair. They made their escape in a black VW city golf.

Kyprighibes alerted his security company Beagle Watch immediately.

“I gave them the registration number and also told them the direction into which the car drove.”

A high-speed chase ensued.

Beagle Watch Security’s operations manager Jakes Shakung said the female suspect was behind the wheel.

“She skipped through red [traffic lights] and collided with two vehicles at the fourth red robot [traffic light] she tried to skip,” Shakung recounted.

The collision occurred on the corner of JG Strydom Road and Besembos Avenue in Weltevreden Park and was where the high-speed chase between security personnel and the suspects came to and end.

Honeydew Police arrived on scene and arrested the two suspects.

“We’ve opened a case of possession of stolen property because they had some of the stolen alcohol in their vehicle,” Honeydew Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Karen Jacobs said.

Fairlands Police spokesperson Constable Michael Kgatla said a case of robbery was opened at his station.

The suspects are in custody and are expected to appear in court soon.
