UJ and Wits scoop MTN radio awards

JOBURG - UJFM and VOW FM had the stars on their side as they scooped up awards at the fifth annual MTN Radio Awards.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) and the University of Witwatersrand (Wits) scooped up awards at the prestigious fifth annual MTN Radio Awards on 12 April.

The awards were held at a gala banquet at the Sandton Convention Centre, where more than 60 awards were handed over to sterling achievers in the radio industry.

VOW (Voice of Wits) FM, took home an impressive four awards including Bulletin Reader, News and Actuality Producer and Drama Programme under different subcategories including community, campus and community.

AB Da Costa of the UJFM, snapped the Breakfast Show Presenter award, for hosting The Continental Breakfast and the station’s second award went to The Sports Network for the best Sports Show – both under the community subcategory.

“I’d like to congratulate the entire UJFM team. The station as a whole is doing very well and we were nominated 11 awards,” said the UJFM station manager, Barry Baldeo.

Our programme and focus is on youth infotainment so, to have a breakfast show presenter scoop the award is a great achievement for us, especially being pitted against the contenders in our category,” Baldeo added.

He said the station prides itself in sports as this was their third year in succession where The Sports Network, won the award.

Vow FM marketing manager Lucky Mdaweni said the team’s ecstasy levels were at a high.

“It has been a long road to get here, where we are being recognised for the kind of programming and content we offer.”
