University honours stampede mom

AUCKLAND PARK - The University of Johannesburg will honour stampede victim, Gloria Sekwena, in an official opening of the Gloria Sekwena Gate.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) will host the official opening of the Gloria Sekwena Gate tomorrow.

Sekwena died tragically in 2012 during a stampede at this university when a crowd of hopeful late applicants surged forward, crushing people against the gates in a desperate attempt to secure academic space at this tertiary institution.

The tragedy that marked late application walk-ins at the university highlighted the desperation of tens of thousands of young people in South Africa, who yearned for quality education.

It took the tragic death of a mother and University of Johannesburg Alumna to highlight to the South African community, the dire need for accessibility in the Higher Education sector.

To honour the memory of Sekwena and what her death symbolises, the university will officially open the Gloria Sekwena Gate at its Bunting Road Campus on 3 April.

Members of the Sekwena family will attended the opening.
