JOBURG - Taking on the Argus this weekend? Here are some safety tips to consider when you've made your way to the mother city.

With the grueling Cape Argus Cycling Tour around the corner cyclists are busy with last minute preparations.

Tips to follow this week in anticipation of the race the race:

  • Get your bike ready: Service your bike at the latest a week before the race and ride it once or twice before the Argus to check that everything is in working order.
  • Pace yourself: Do not try and catch up with lost training now, you won’t get much fitter.
  • Count down, cut down: Cut down on your training you have’nt done over the last few months.

The night before:

  • Check sunscreen and water bottles: Prepare a checklist of things to take with you on race day. Make sure all your cycling equipment and personal belongings are ready the night before the race. This way, you won’t spend the morning of the race rushing around.

On race day:

  • Do a final check: Check your bike and pay special attention to things such as tyre pressures and the bike’s chain before you set off.
  • Get kitted out: Put on your biking gloves and be sure to wear padded biking shorts.
  • Don’t rush to the race: Make sure you get to the venue well on time. Rushing there will make you stress, which in turn will sap your energy.

General tips for the big event:

  • Always wear a well-fitting helmet.
  • Be aware and stay focused on the road ahead.
  • If you are not comfortable or experienced riding in bunches rather keep a safe following distance.
  • Wear sunscreen because a average rider will spend from five to six hours on the road.
