City says no to urban decay

JOBURG - City officials take to the streets of Region B in a bid to rid the area of uban decay.

The City of Johannesburg is determined to rid its land of illegal activity and the resultant urban decay.

On 19 February, the Citizen Relationship and Urban Management (CRUM) unit embarked on a raid in the Region B suburbs of Sophiatown and Newlands, hunting down dodgy businesses.

A dozen notorious buildings were inspected by the metro police and environmental health inspectors.

Some businesses didn’t escape unscathed – notices of compliance and fines were issued to the owners.

The businesses that were busted included a childcare facility that had approximately 30 children enrolled, an illegal accommodation establishment and a building that made use of electricity that was connected illegally.

The clean-up was organised by Region B director Vicky Shupin, who was stunned by what they discovered and assured that this was not the end.

“This is not a once-off blitz, but will take place regularly to ensure compliance and for businesses to get their houses in order,” she said.

“The operations should also be considered to be a learning opportunity and for businesses to operate on a clean slate. Businesses are encouraged to contact the City of Johannesburg Departments for clarity and in ensuring compliance with the city’s bylaws.”
