UB40’s Ali Campbell just wants to dance

JOBURG - It might be difficult to decide who is more excited about UB40's upcoming South African tour; their fans or the band members themselves.

Frontman Ali Campbell spoke to City Buzz about music, South Africa, and more.

The band last visited our shores in 2007, when they performed at the Cradle of Humankind.

“We’ve only ever had wonderful shows in South Africa,” said Campbell.

“Our crowds are enthusiastic; all colours, all ages, and they love reggae music. We look forward to more of the same.”

UB40 is one of the world’s best-selling bands, with album sales in excess of 70 million records; something Campbell attributed to reggae music.

“I think we owe our success to reggae music. All cool people the world over love reggae. It’s the youngest music form, and the most influential,” he said.

Campbell said his involvement in the album production process had kept him focused on the music, rather than the trappings of fame and showmanship.

“I’ve always produced our material,” he said.

“It’s an ongoing journey, learning with each album. I’m constantly trying to improve the production, which is great fun, but hard work. That keeps me focused.”

When asked if UB40 sent out a consistent message through their music, Campbell’s answer was a simple, “Yeah! Let’s dance.”

And what does the future hold for this much-loved band?

“More tours, more music,” said Campbell.

Catch UB40 on stage on 5 April at Johannesburg Botanic Gardens, Emmarentia.
