Only the strong survived the daunting Dusi

EMMARENTIA - Local club conquers the toughest endurance race in the world.

Numerous paddlers from Dabulamanzi, the Emmarentia Dam canoe club, streamed down to the midlands to take on the world’s toughest canoe endurance race.

The Dusi Canoe Marathon took place from 13 to 15 February over 120 gruelling kilometres and despite the blistering hot conditions of the Dusi Valley of a Thousand Hills, more than one thousand athletes paddled, swam, ran, walked and dragged their boats across the rough terrain between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.

Canoeists Graham Burnside and James Crichton represented the local club and finished the race in overall 539rd position out of 755 boats in just under 14 hours. They ranked 14th in the Sub Grand Master category, paddlers between 55 and 60 years old.
