Residents association appeals for unity

MELVILLE - Residents Association explains impending changes to suburb's physical environment

The Melville Residents Association (MRA) is appealing to residents to join hands in a united front rather than to work in isolation when dealing with issues pertinent to the suburb.

The MRA is not idealistic about the realities of Melville, but remains optimistic that it can meet the challenges as a united and concerned group of citizens.

By definition, the MRA relies on the City of Johannesburg and police in matters of service delivery and law enforcement. “However, by the same token we believe that it is within our power to fill in the gaps proactively where possible,” said MRA chairperson Nicky Rofail.

The association aligns itself closely with the Ward 87 committee established by councillor Amanda Forsythe.

A brand new security initiative, focused on the business sector, will be rolled out with Saber Tactical from 1 October.

Its aim will be to clear the street of drug dealers and vagrants and to tighten up security for business and residents, create a pedestrian-friendly environment and to assist homeless people. This initiative will not impact on the current residential operations by CSS Tactical.

A petition drafted by advocate Derek Milne of the association – spearheaded by Melville resident Lesley Cunningham – will be submitted to the city council, requesting that it acts in accordance with its mandate and makes the necessary resources available to deal with the drug situation, in particular.
