Linden pool reopens

Linden’s public swimming pool is expected to reopen on 15 July.

Long overdue, on 4 July the City of Johannesburg began pumping water in the swimming pool.

The community expected it to have reopened in June. According to Ward 99 Councillor Bruce Herbert, the City has invested approximately R3 million into the revamp of the public pool. A new pump and a filtration system have been installed. The paving has been redone and various other alterations have been implemented.

“Although the City is planning to open the pool on 15 July, if there is a problem with filtration there might be a delay. It will take two days to fill up the pool and a week to heat it, if there are no problems like water leaks,” Herbert said.

The swimming pool’s operations manager Reanne Lee said the wait is worth it. Roy Lotkin, an international swimming coach affiliated with the Waterborne Swimming Club said the pool has been neglected for a while and people have long been waiting for the reopening. “We are excited; we are going to be offering swimming programmes at the pool for all ages.”

The Linden Swimming Pool is an excellent facility and used for many purposes such as swimming lessons, provincial squad training and water aerobics, said swimming coach Penny Quinlan. “Hopefully the many technical problems the pool has suffered over the past few years are sorted out.”
