The difficulties of balancing studies and music

Khaniele is a first-year student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics at the University of Johannesburg.

I am Kulani Aleck Khaniele, and my stage name is Lil Kurn in the music industry.

I’m a first-year student studying BA in Linguistics at the University of Johannesburg.

I started making music in Grade 4 taking the influence of American rappers Lil Wayne, and Eminem.

My mom has always said I must focus on my studies, but I’ve managed to focus on both.

Fortunately, I did well in matric and got accepted into university. I sometimes think that my mom is right and I should take a step back from music because I cannot balance my time and energy between music and studies.

People who listen to my music expect me to put out more tracks but my studies require time.

However, I’ve come up with a strategy and I’ve scheduled time for studying and music. Creating music is something that I enjoy as it improves my mood and motivation, and stimulates me which positively impacts my studies. I also gain transferable skills such as creativity, communication, teamwork and problem-solving.
