Abbotts College Northcliff raises funds for sanitary towels

The school not only raises funds, but they also donate packets of sanitary towels.

Little know of the power a small red tin can hold like the learners and staff of Abbotts College Northcliff.

Recently, through the efforts of the school’s outgoing secretary, Melissa Massey, they managed to raise R1 522. This was done through the use of a little red tin to collect money. This was donated to Dis-chem’s Million Comforts Campaign which aims to provide sanitary pads to teenage girls in need.

The red tin became synonymous with Massey post-Covid-19. “It would be at my desk and every time learners would ask that I help them find misplaced items like their locker keys they would have to give me a donation,” she said. Additionally, she would accept any money as long as it was not made of copper.

Along with the money collected, learners were also encouraged to donate packets of sanitary towels.

Massey is retiring after having worked at Abbotts College since 2009, starting at their Johannesburg South branch and ending up in Northcliff. “I have led a good working life and have met wonderful people and I tried to show learners that it’s lovely to give to others than to always want to be given things, which can be selfish. This is why we did this drive.”

In her time at the school, she has helped coordinate various charitable initiatives, one year they raised 300 eco-bricks which were donated to a home, and for a couple of years, the school did ‘barefoot day’ where they put shoes out on the pavement that people who were in need of shoes could take.

In her opinion, when people are fortunate, they take it for granted that they have all they have and care little about someone else. This shows no care for others around you. She reflected on cold winter nights when she would get into a warm bed and thank God for all she has to keep her warm as there are so many who go without. “I just do not know how they do it, but this what happens around us. So, I try to do all sorts of things to make people aware of the fact that there are a lot of people less fortunate than themselves.”
