Newlands gets a clean-up
The clean up was organised by volunteer group, Asez Wao whose efforts are all about the betterment of the earth.
International young adult worker volunteer group, Asez Wao recently hosted the 7 281st Worldwide Clean-Up campaign in Newlands.
Asez stands for ‘Save the Earth from A to Z,’ while Wao stands for ‘We Are One Family.’ Put together, this all means ‘let us save the Earth from the beginning to the end as one family.’
And try to save it they did through this clean-up campaign that was conducted in collaboration with Pikitup, the city’s official waste management service provider. A total of 83 volunteers gathered on the warm Johannesburg morning to clean up the old swimming pool area which has become an illegal dumping site.
For the day’s clean up, Pikitup supplied brooms, rakes, litter pickers and plastic bags to the volunteers.
In his address, Ward 82 councillor Jeffrey Amod said education within the community on the importance of cleanliness is paramount, adding the community should not only be reliant on the City of Johannesburg. “As a clean society, we cannot live in dirt.” Amod appreciated that these volunteers came out that morning and took the initiative to be of service to the community “From the bottom of my heart, I thank the organisers for this clean-up.”
Tania Oldjohn, senior project coordinator in the City of Johannesburg Mayoral Office was also there and thanked the organisation for their efforts. “To the volunteers that are here, thank you for giving up your Sunday to be here.”
It made one proud to see how many of the youth formed part of the clean-up as they will ultimately inherit leadership of the country and its communities.
Asez Wao spokesperson, Thando Matutu said the group will continue to take a step in cleaning the environment with the heart of a mother. “Just as a mother takes care of the whole family with love, Asez Wao will continue to conduct volunteer activities with the heart of a mother to take care of society which is like our family.”
