The All Blacks are a foursome to be feared on bowling greens across the City of Gold

One of three teams from the Protea Sports Club in Emmarentia, they are hoping for more members who play the game just socially, or more seriously.

New stars in the bowling fraternity, The All Blacks, are not only good at the game but also have a ball playing it too.

The All Blacks play for the Protea Sports Club in Emmarentia and recently placed second in the Johannesburg Bowls Association’s league.

Their most recent game against Morningside was another victory which they won 8 to 3.

The league now moves to the knockout stages.

The team, along with 24 other members is hoping 2023 will be a year of growth for the club.
On Tuesday evenings, players enjoy the sport socially while they play competitively on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Team member Laurence Makyao said, “While we play seriously, we are mostly a social club where we gather as friends to spend time outdoors. It is a lot of fun. I started playing just for fun because I work here at the club but I now take it seriously when on the green.”

Thomas Tshikoi, the green keeper and captain of the team, began playing in 1995 and has never stopped. “It’s a fantastic game and it keeps me fit but it is not as strenuous as soccer or running.”

President of the club Pannie Bezuidenhout started in 2005 after the premises had been closed for almost a decade. “We got a lease from the City and needed a sport to be played on the property so decided to become a bowling venue,” he said.

“My dream is to encourage the youth to play more and to bring diversity to the game. We are family here and want to represent the spirit of South Africa.”

One green is named after Mosie Moola who was imprisoned with Nelson Mandela and who has been a good friend of Bezuidenhout’s.

New players can be coached at the club and its three teams are hoping more players looking for social or serious games will join them.
