Performing artist raises GBV awareness in the neighbourhood

Madisa believes that through his performances, he can touch people's hearts and inspire them to be their best.

My name is Junior Madisa. I am an actor, writer, and director.

Let me take you through how it all started. I fell in love with performing arts at the age of 13 but had my first performance at the age of 16.

I`ve been performing for almost 10 years now. It takes a lot of inspiration for one to come up with ideas as a writer, in terms of writing a script or a play. I look into the reality of things, like what is happening around me, to get inspiration. Most of my plays are based on what is happening around me, which are societal issues.

One of the plays that I wrote and directed is called The Burden of a Woman, based on gender-based violence that is happening every day in our communities, and even churches. I was trying to elaborate on the abuse that women go through and the repercussions of it. Women tend to do things that are cruel because of the abuse that they get from their partners.

What inspired me to become an artist was the fact that I could be whoever I wanted to be. I can become the president of South Africa or the minister through my performances. This is what inspired me to get into the performing arts.

I wanted to express myself in a way that was unique and authentic. Through my art, I can tell stories and convey emotions that words alone cannot capture. It is a form of communication that transcends language barriers and connects people from all walks of life.

As an artist, I am constantly exploring new techniques and styles to push the boundaries of what is possible. Whether it’s through dance, music, or visual art, I am always striving to create something that is both beautiful and meaningful. Being an artist is not just a career for me; it is a way of life.

It requires dedication, discipline, and a willingness to take risks. But the rewards are immeasurable, the satisfaction of creating something truly unique and the joy of sharing it with others. As I continue on my artistic journey, I hope to inspire others to pursue their passions and find their creative voice.
