Northcliff teen gives sensible fashion advice to peers

Desmond Makamure warns against spending a fortune on trendy crazy clothes that won't be worn in a year or two.

Desmond Makamure is humble and friendly but his informal outfit is anything but. He has carefully selected items to wear to look a certain way, nothing is haphazard or by chance.

With dreams of becoming a fashion guru, he explains why he loves it so much.

Here is what he had to say:

I love the different cultures and different backgrounds everyone has. Fashion is influenced so much by different cultures and different traditions from long ago which is often seen in what we wear today in our styles and outfits.

Being able to take bits here and bits there from different cultures is really cool and can make an outfit look good.

So many luxury brands nowadays are looking back and using designs that have been around since the 1800s. Those designs are timeless.

These days so many people are wearing the same things and everyone looks the same.

Why not wear something different that is a bit older or unique to stand out a bit?

You don’t have to have money to be fashionable and don’t worry about expensive brands. They are not needed.

As long as you feel good about yourself and make an effort to look good then life is good.

Learning to match items and have balance in your outfit is important. I personally like neutral colours like black, white and earthy tones like browns. Anything goes with those colours so they are easy to match with other pieces of clothing you have. There is no need to spend hours deciding what to wear if most of your clothes go together anyway. At night I might choose darker colours but that’s about it.

The good thing about taking this approach and not buying expensive brands and trends is that your clothes will not go out of fashion. People listen too much to fashion trends and social influencers who make them feel under pressure to go and get crazy clothes that they won’t wear in a year or two.

Keep it simple. Make sure you are comfortable and be cool with yourself.
