Leaders are developed at Orban School

Orban School sees the potential of leadership within all its learners.

Orban School takes leadership training seriously as they believe every child has the potential to lead in some way and make a difference.

At the end of their Grade 6 year, the school’s soon-to-be seniors all receive a monitor badge together with their blazers.

According to the school’s Louine van der Vyver, during the first term of their Grade 7 year, all monitors do a Toastmasters training course as part of their English syllabus. During this time, once a week learners have to prepare a speech and receive coaching on public speaking and leadership from internationally certified Toastmasters, Leon Malan and Andree Venter.

Toastmasters International is described as a non-profit educational organisation that teaches public speaking and leadership skills through a worldwide network of about 280 000 members of more than 14 700 clubs in 144 countries.

“Towards the end of the first term, all Grade 7s have to sign a code of conduct and they are all promoted to leaders during our leadership assembly, where head leaders are also announced,” explained Van der Vyver.

As leadership is found in all spaces, this senior class also plays a big leadership role in the school’s annual production. This year’s production of Alice in Wonderland saw them confidently sing, dance and lead a good stage drama.

Van der Vyver thinks they did a sterling job.
