The Irish Club in Linden needs JPC to be responsive to the community

As custodian of the property, the entity should ensure tenants and the community are not left wanting when conflict arises.

Lizel van den Berg lives close to the Irish Club in Linden, which she said has become a nightmare.

“The noise pollution, public drinking and rowdiness has made my life hell. I have tried to ask everyone I can think of for help. So far, nothing has happened, and I am at my wit’s end.”

She said more young people were going to the pub for shots of alcohol during ‘happy hour’.

Ward 99 councillor Nicole van Dyk, said, “I have tried to contact JPC (Johannesburg Property Company) several times to get an answer to the status of the lease, but they have not been forthcoming. We need clarification on this, and other similar properties, to check if events and live bands are allowed or not.”

She said a landlord was responsible for managing their tenants and in the case of the Irish Club, this should be no different.

“I am not saying anyone is doing anything wrong, but I can’t check on behalf of a resident until JPC shares this information with us as custodians of the property.

“Of all the state entities I have to deal with, JPC is the most difficult to get answers from, which is problematic on several levels.”

JPC spokesperson Lucky Sindane said, “Their lease is valid and we are aware of complaints. If the club continues to make a noise, we will request our environmental officers to go and measure the noise levels.”

The Irish Club lease holder Vera Desmond said, “We are aware of noise complaints, which have been happening for a long time. We have had numerous meetings with JPC. We have asked them to send an inspector who can check our noise levels, which they are yet to do. We are in the dark as to whether or not we are compliant, when it comes to sound coming from our venue. Hopefully, this article will push them to come and finally assist us.”

She said the business was in dire straits six months ago and they are doing all they can to make it a nice and safe local place for the community to enjoy.
