Gauteng colours for De La Salle chess players

De La Salle Holy Cross College celebrate the successes of their young chess players.

De La Salle Holy Cross College Junior School extended a huge congratulations to five of its learners who earned their Gauteng Chess Colours after they participated in the South African Junior Chess Championships held in December.

Two of the five, Sebastian Stelloh and Yishai Pillay, played for the U8 Johannesburg Metro Team and achieved first place overall. They both won board trophies with Yishai winning four out of his five games and Sebastian winning all five of his games.

Having qualified to play in the championships, they will be awarded provincial chess colours and will go on to compete for their South African chess colours.

At five years old, fellow chess player Alexander Stelloh was the youngest player at the event and achieved first place out of all the B team players. Matthew Ma and Peiqi Shi of the U10 B team were placed third overall.

The school said this tournament was of great importance to the chess players in South Africa as it allowed them to represent their region and participate against the best in the country.

Their success allowed them to participate in the South African Junior Closed Championships after which players would be selected to represent South Africa internationally.
