Westbury community marches to Sophiatown Police Station following murders

The father of one of the men that was killed recently said that the Sophiatown Police Station needs to be reshuffled.

The Westbury community has decided to stand against the ongoing murders that have plagued their community and were saying “enough is enough”.

This was in the form of a peaceful protest on November 10.

The Northcliff Melville Times was at the Sophiatown Police Station for the peaceful march that was organised by the community although some members maintain that it was not planned.

There was heavy police presence at the entrance of the Sophiatown station ahead of the expected large numbers of community members who wanted to be addressed by the police provincial commissioner Elias Mawela.

The Sophiatown Community Police Forum chair Gus Malgas said, “When killings happen elsewhere the minister of police and everyone goes to attend – here in Westbury nobody cares and our people are being murdered daily – this is why the community is so angry now and they are demanding action by police.”

A community member Jefferson Johnson said the community is disappointed with the lack of convictions in their area and are now taking action and demanding that they be heard.

Melisa Davids says they are tired of being neglected by the police.

“We cannot respect the constitution or the laws of this country because it doesn’t respect us. We came down and we peacefully marched…We cried out to God to help us and when we opened our eyes we saw all these police vans that are not even visible in our communities daily,” she said.
