Dabulamanzi’s Darlings celebrate women

The Dabulamanzi Darlings spent a day giving back to the girls of Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club.

August is the month the country celebrates the history of the brave, strong heroines before us, and now, whether they’re making huge moves on land or major strides in waters, the celebration of women has no bounds.

Dabulamanzi Canoe Club’s Dabulamanzi Darlings, spent August 14 with the young girls of the Soweto Canoe and Recreation Club (SCARC) and, on this day, they gifted each girl with gift bags that included sanitary pads, sports bras and lycra canoeing tops.

The Dabulamanzi Darlings raise funds throughout the year for these young women from disadvantaged backgrounds who are between eight and 18 years. They mentor them and ensure they have all the female items they need so enjoy the opportunity to paddle on the water and participate in races and days like these when they were on the water.

According to media liaison for Gauteng Canoe Union Jennie Dallas, SCARC is an ADreach social development initiative that uplifts previously disadvantaged youth through the power of sport. “Dabulamanzi Canoe Club ladies celebrated womanhood with fun activities, including a paddle on the water in newly presented tops, a motivational speech, refreshments and gift bags to reflect on and empower women through fun,” she said.

Dallas added that former executive mayor of Cape Town, Helen Zille, made the day even more exciting with her great motivational speech, “Everyone who was present learned a lot from her encouraging words.”

She added that among the organising driving force is Elandrie Zietsman, who is described as being invested in this club in every way possible. There are even more women involved in the committee who aim to support all initiatives and they are grateful to all the sponsors who provide support.
