“Teachers develop citizens who will lead our beautiful country, and they can do that more easily because of support from the department of education like we have received.”
These were the moving words spoken by the principal of Roosevelt High School, Willie de Wet, at the unveiling of 10 new classrooms.
The classrooms, funded by the Gauteng Department of Education, were built in a short three months and are already in use. The department had already funded an additional eight classrooms just last year.
The school is situated in a high-pressure area, according to Director General for Curriculum Development in the Office of Deputy General Vaughan Holmes. “These classrooms will alleviate some pressures with regards to learner placement. Additional teachers have already started working and new pupils admitted.”
Currently, the school accommodates 1 764 learners.
De Wet spoke passionately about how having a good working relationship with the department was key to achieving success, not only in the provision of new classrooms but generally in the running and performance of the school. “The support from the district office is immense. The school management team, teachers and every person involved with Roosevelt is playing their part to do the best that we can for the children in our care.”
“Education liberates citizens from the clutches of poverty and the gift of education is to be celebrated, especially in a country like ours,” said circuit manager, Joyce Legoete.
The last speaker was acting District Director Vuyi Cindi who spoke at length about girls during this Woman’s Month. Cindi said, “It is clear that children are safe here. Health and hygiene are clearly front of mind when one looks at the beautiful bathrooms and facilities which all play a role in enabling a conducive learning environment.”
She also spoke about how new school buildings are coming up throughout the province as part of government’s plans to increase access to education.
When the blue ceremonial ribbon was cut by Cindi, there was an expression of a celebratory mood and one of gratitude for all the role players that made this possible was tangible.
Interspersed among speeches was a fantastic performance by the school’s choir which left all in attendance visibly moved by the skill and enthusiasm with which they performed.
