Take extra precaution in securing your vehicle – SAPS

In a recent safety awareness alert, SAPS encourages motorists to take extra precautions when driving or parking their vehicles.

As incidents of vehicle theft and theft out of vehicles continue to rise, the South African Police Service is urging vehicle owners to take extra precautions.

In a recent safety awareness alert, the police service outlined safety tips for motorists when driving and/or parking their vehicles.

Motorists are encouraged to:

  • Avoid parking their vehicles where there are no security officers or car guards present.
  • Make sure that all of the doors and windows, and boot are properly closed and locked.
  • Always close your windows when driving in the city centre.
  • Do not open your windows for hawkers along the road or at an intersection.
  • When driving, keep the doors locked and your windows closed at all times.
  • Avoid displaying anything valuable such as a handbag, briefcase, watch, cellphone or laptop in full view on the seats. Instead, lock your valuables in the boot of your vehicle.
  • Familiarise yourself with your route prior to embarking on your trip.
  • Always be vigilant and observe your area. If you notice something suspicious when parking your vehicle, report it to security or the centre management.
