Warriors with a purpose encourage Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital cancer patients

The pink bras are a symbol of hope and love for breast cancer patients.

Warriors with a Purpose paint Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital pink by donating 67 bras to the oncology ward.

Last week, Warriors with a Purpose (a breast cancer non-profit company) spent 67 minutes at the academic hospital in light of Mandela Day.

Founder of the warriors, Renne Singh, said the goal of the initiative was to make the cancer patients special and cared for.

“Today we are here to give the survivours more hope and support in breast cancer. The reason behind the bra is that even if you had a mastectomy, you still can wear the bra and feel beautiful.”

Singh added the second handover of the bras would happen in the coming months.

“The pink bra initiative will continue until the Warriors with a Purpose second annual cancer awareness 5km colour run at the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in October which is when the second handover will be. Today we are here to give the survivors more hope and support in breast cancer.”

A breast cancer patient, Lina Mokoena, said receiving a bra was a thoughtful gesture.

“This act of kindness makes me and other patients feel appreciated and that someone is thinking about us. This also helps us to keep being positive about our situation and condition.”

Mokoena added that chemotherapy took a toll on her health.

” I was diagnosed with breast cancer this year in March, and this is my fifth cycle of chemotherapy and the process is a rollercoaster on my overall health and emotions. Sometimes I’m in pain and don’t even want to do things I am capable of doing on my own.”

Oncology operations manager Tersia LaBercensie said, “What Warriors with a Purpose did for our ward today is a contribution toward our patients and echoing the acts of kindness of Nelson Mandela. What the initiative did for us shows they care about the patients which makes a difference in the patients’ lives, because they are going through a difficult time in their lives.”
