Victory for Victory Park

Two local learners have been elected onto the Joburg Junior Council.

The Johannesburg Junior Council (JJC) has two new mini City councillors who attend King David Primary School in Victory Park.

Maya Roth and Safriel Ndzingani, both in Grade 7, were recently elected as junior councillors at a ceremony at Crawford College in Sandton.

The council is a non-profit organisation that gives young leaders from 36 different schools around Johannesburg the opportunity to participate in this exciting and important programme.

It is through experiences like this that competent and democratic leaders of the future are nurtured and hopefully inspired.

“Now that I have been elected as chief whip, I want to help and be a part of the solution when working with others to help our City,” Maya said.

In his role as deputy mayor, Safriel hopes to bring many of his ideas around poverty reduction and assisting those less fortunate than himself to a broader community. One idea is the creation of a community vegetable gardens to assist impoverished families and poorer hospitals.

‘Bringing light to the darkest place, putting smiles on peoples’ faces’ was a motto both learners mentioned in discussion about their election, which shows an understanding of their new roles.

“Having two members on the executive team from the same school is an extremely proud moment,” said Nirvana Rogers, Campus marketing and admissions manager for the school.
