Suspect fires firearm at a funeral at Westpark Cemetery

Police have confirmed that three attendees are injured and are currently in hospital.

The Sophiatown police are currently on scene of a shooting that took place at Westpark Cemetery, Montgomery Park on May 6.

According to the station’s spokesperson Captain TJ De Bruyn, it is alleged that a 43-year-old man discharged a firearm, injuring three attendees of a funeral. “The three injured were taken to Helen Joseph Hospital,” he explained.

The suspect was apprehended and is, at this stage in police custody.

The police are still investigating the reason the man fired his firearm. However, it has been confirmed that it is a licensed firearm that belongs to him.

De Bruyn explained that the police are currently not aware of the severity of the injuries sustained by the victims.
