Historic Documentary Film Society honouring Barbra Steisand’s 80th birthday

EMMARENTIA – The Historic Film Society will host a screening of one of Barbra Streisand's concerts and you are invited.

Be sure not to miss the Historic Documentary Film Society honouring Barbra Steisand’s 80th birthday by showcasing her concert recorder live at Arrowhead Park, Anaheim.

Selwyn Klass, who is organising the event, shared his appreciation for the performer. He described how many years ago Ster Films, before it became Ster-Kinekor, had various complexes to showcase their movies, and its Joburg-based complex, Ster-City, is where he saw Streisand’s debut film, Funny Girl. “These complexes were like showpieces, with beautiful plush chairs and huge screens with curtains in front that opened and it was all part of the dramatics of going to the movies, it was an experience.”

Klass explained that at the 1969 Oscars, for the first time in history, Streisand, who had just starred in her first film, tied with Katharine Hepburn for Best Actress award, something that hasn’t happened since.

Streisand, according to Klass, was never keen on giving concerts, this after she had a stage fright performing at New York City’s Central Park in front of a large audience, “And she vowed she would never give a concert again, but she eventually came to concerts, in a limited capacity, with the one at Arrowhead Park Anaheim in 1994.”

The society is screening this particular concert because she is at home again with her audience and her repertoire is timeless. The screening of the concert will take place at 09:30/10:00 at Ditsong Military Museum, Saxonwold at the cost of R120. There will also be lavish tea at the end.
