Adult and minor in cahoots in alleged crime

SOPHIATOWN – Details on bank card leads to victim who was recently robbed.

Officers of Sophiatown Police Station arrested an adult and a minor on February 2 after they were searched during a daily patrol.

The station’s spokesperson Captain TJ de Bruyn said, “As we searched them, we found a toy gun on them along with a bank card, a small radio, perfume and other items. When asked who’s bank card it was, the adult suspect said it belonged to someone who owed him money.”

Fortunately, there was a surname on the back of the card which matched the surname of a person who had recently opened a case of house robbery.

Police contacted the man who reported the case and he confirmed the card and other items were his and had been recently stolen. The suspects were arrested and charged with house robbery, being in possession of a dangerous weapon and being in possession of suspected stolen property.

While processing the suspects, the adult lied about his accomplice. “The older suspect lied about the minor’s age but upon investigation he was found to be below the age of 18. We then attempted to locate his parents or guardians to process him in line with the Child Justice Act.”

Furthermore, the adult has also been linked to a business robbery which took place late in 2021. Police are investigating the matter and he remains in custody.
