Police look to stop bicycle theft

LINDEN – Safety tips shared to reduce bicycle theft, house robberies and other criminal instances.

Linden Police Station continues to investigate the trend of criminals targeting bicycles in their policing precinct.

According to the station spokesperson Sergeant Takalani Sibiya, another case was recently opened in connection with the stealing of bicycles from a property. Sergeant Sibiya said, “It is alleged by the complainant that her bicycles were in her yard with all in order. A few days later she discovered that the two bicycles were suspected to be stolen as they were missing. She then proceeded to report the matter to the police.”

While a case was opened in relation to this incident, police were able to recover two other bicycles. Sibiya said these will be held at the station until the owners can identify and prove they are theirs.

The stealing of bikes, recent house robberies and other instances where the property is being stolen has put the station on high alert. The station is urging the public to remain vigilant and avoid being negligent when it comes to their belongings and homes. Sibiya advised that installing security devices such as window bars, security doors and gates, razor wires and additional door-locking devices would make a difference in a home’s security.

The station also shared the following tips to help the public:

  • Change the passcodes on the electronic lock and garage doors from time to time
  • Trim the trees, shrubs and bushes around your house to eliminate hiding spots
  • Ensure that all the doors and windows are closed and locked properly
  • Large dogs serve as a deterrent, have at least one of your dogs trained to sleep inside the house
  • When leaving your house, inform at least your family member or neighbour
  • Ensure that tools like axes, spades, picks that can be used in an attack are locked away
  • Always report suspicious movement or behaviour to the police
  • Do not employ casual workers without references
  • Do not allow strangers that will come and ask for jobs inside your house without proper identification
  • Always change locks if your keys go missing or are lost.
