House robberies continue to be an issue

BRIXTON – Police warn homeowners to be careful of those they employ to work on their properties.

Housebreakings and house robberies were still a concern for Brixton Police Station in their precinct and police have called on residents to be vigilant and cautious at all times.

According to the station’s spokesperson Jeanette Backhoff, house robberies mainly occur between 9am and 12pm when the domestic workers are allegedly involved by giving information to suspects of all valuables/money that are being kept in the house.

She advised, “Residents are requested to do a proper security check on domestic workers before they are being employed as most of them are undocumented foreign nationals with no proper credentials and addresses or next of kin.”

Through investigations, she said it had become clear that in some cases homeowners employed contractors to build or to do repairs without compensation and then they took revenge by committing house robberies to sell valuables for money owed to them.

Police were doing everything in their power to curb house robberies. According to Backhoff, they have increased patrols in the precinct, especially at the problematic days and times of the week according to their crime analyst.

“We have constant crime awareness campaigns, handing out pamphlets making members of the public aware of housebreakings with safety tips and special operations, especially at night doing door to door campaigns in the areas that are being targeted where gates are being left open, doors or safety gates are opened and more.”
