Local teen canoeist to represent country in Portugal

VICTORY PARK – Finlay Leask forms part of team of canoeist who were chosen by Canoeing South Africa to represent the country.

The Portuguese rivers beckon for Finlay Leask who, come 3 to 6 September, will form part of the team that will represent South Africa at the ICF Junior and U23 Sprint World Championships that will be held in Portugal.

The canoeist, who is currently a Grade 11 learner at De La Salle Holy Cross College, selection announcement comes after he successfully completed the SA Schools Sprint Championships and National Selection Event for U23s at the Shongweni Dam, KwaZulu-Natal.

While racing in his K1 canoe, the Northcliff resident is said to have won the 200m, 500m and 1 000m U18 boys’ races. “I’m honoured to represent South Africa and it’s one step closer to the Olympic dream,” said Leask.

The team was announced by Canoeing South Africa in May. Atholl Murray, headmaster at De La Salle Holy Cross College High School, said it is an honour that Leask is to represent his country at the junior world canoeing event in Portugal. “We are extremely proud of Finlay and wish him all the best and will be following this event with anticipation.”
