COJ’s health department opens non-medical Covid-19 vaccination sites for over-60s

JOBURG – The City is aiming at vaccinating about 67 per cent of its 5.4 million residents in the next year or two.

The City of Johannesburg’s Health Department opened its non-medical sites to aid the Gauteng provincial government’s phase 2 of the Covid-19 vaccination rollout programme on 26 May.

These will be the first in a number of sites that are earmarked to speed up the process of vaccination.

In all, the City is aiming at vaccinating about 67 per cent of its 5.4 million residents in the next year or two. The current phase 2 mass vaccination rollout programme prioritises persons who are 60 years and older as they are more vulnerable to serious illness, hospitalisation and death in the event they contract Covid-19.

In its second week, the mass vaccination rollout programme is expected to inoculate more than 450 000 Joburg residents over the age of 60 years in eight non-medical sites across the city. The non-medical sites, which are set to start opening from tomorrow are as follows:

• Ennerdale Ext 9 Community Centre, Ennerdale – Wednesday, 26 May 2021.
• Marlboro Sport Complex, Malboro Gardens – Wednesday, 26 May 2021.
• Kanana Community Hall, Rabie Ridge, Midrand – Wednesday, 26 May 2021.
• Altrek Stadium (Sport Complex Alexandra Eastbank), Alexandra – Wednesday, 26 May 2021.
• Danie Van Zyl Recreational Centre, Randburg – Friday, 28 May 2021.
• Yeoville Recreation Centre, Yeoville –  Wednesday, 26 May 2021.

The City of Joburg’s Member of the Mayoral Committee for Health and Social Development, Eunice Mgcina, encouraged all residents to first register on the national EVDS (Electronic Vaccination Data System) with their (RSA) ID or passport (Non-SA) to ensure a speedy vaccination process. Residents are encouraged to visit the vaccination sites only after they had received an SMS advising them to do so.

“As the City of Joburg, we are excited to have partnered with the provincial government to deliver these much-needed vaccines to help us fight the surge of Covid-19. We urge residents to register for the programme on the EVDS platform or any health facility in the city,” said Mgcina.

“I would also like to call on the youth in the Joburg region to also help the elderly in their respective parts of the city to get registered on the EVDS,” added Mgcina.

Residents can also get more information on the vaccination process from any of the City’s 79 clinics across all seven regions.
