15 year jail sentence awaits house robber

BRIXTON – Accused fleed the scene with three cellphone’s, a laptop and one thousand rand cash.


Accused house robbery convicted to 15 years behind bars.

The Brixton Regional Court sentenced a 30-year-old Zimbabwean national to spend the next 15 years in jail on 20 April.

According to a statement released by the office of the Johannesburg District Commander Major General Max Masha the accused with two of his accomplices robbed a house in Mayfair on 13 May 2020 at around 6pm. It read, “A 55-year-old father was inside the house with two of his children – a 16- year-old girl and 19-year-old boy. They heard a knock on the door and when his child stood up to open the door, the accused pushed the door, pointed a firearm at them and hit the father with the butt of the firearm.”
After forcing the victims to lie down on the floor they proceeded to ransack the house.

According to the police the accused was once hired to do electrical work at the house in the past. Fortunately, the family was saved by one of their sons who had returned home from a trip to a store to purchase juice. Before fleeing the scene, the accused locked the victims in a toilet leaving with three cell phones, a laptop and R1 000 cash. The accused was eventually traced and apprehended on 15 May 2020 at Noord Taxi Rank.

The district commander’s office celebrated the conviction as a good one due to the efforts and diligent work done by the investigating officer Warrant Officer Kgomo of Johannesburg Central Trio detectives. “We commend the investigating officer for leading a quality investigation that resulted in the guilty verdict. We hope this sentence will scare away would-be offenders from committing the same crime.”
