The Little Mermaid takes to the stage at Orban School

WESTDENE – The school will soon showcase their pre-recorded stage production of its adaptation of the kids' classic.

Orban School will once again produce and stage their annual musical production, but this year, they embraced digital technology and pre-recorded the entire show, to be screened as a film.

The school bought the stage production of the The Little Mermaid and final recordings for the cast wrapped up about a week ago with editing currently taking place. This will be showcased at a movie première evening for parents and learners to attend, with a downloadable link for family members, who would like to share in a moment and view remotely.

Though this is the first time the school has pre-recorded and produced a film of their music production, their previous stage productions include Peter Pan, Fame Jr, Alice in Wonderland, Mulan and more. Drama teacher Michelle Zulch, was responsible for content localisation, direction and production, while sound, camera work and post-production were outsourced to a local film company. As part of Orban’s focus on language diversity, an Afrikaans song was also included.

“We chose The Little Mermaid for our 2021 production to complement the specific group of Grade 7s of this year and to ensure that every child has a good role allocation and like before, this is an all-inclusive production,” said Zulch. Adding they elected two casts, to offer every Grade 7 learner a main part in the production.

“We believe that our annual school production will allow every learner the opportunity to play a leading role, sing, dance and for the first time in 2021, act in front of a camera.” She explained their learners have now learned not only to play to a live audience but also to act into camera, capturing their every move. “This is a life skill they will use in this digital age where video content and small film productions are in high demand. I am proud to report that the cast adapted quite quickly, and enjoyed the authenticity, hearing us direct and using words like action, cut, and wrap.”
