SAPS dispels rumours of a student shot in Braamfontein #WitsProtest

BRAAMFONTEIN – The South African Police Service said in a statement that none of its members deployed in Braamfontein on 15 March had fired any shots during the protests.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has taken note of a video and reports claiming that a woman was shot during protests in Braamfontein yesterday, 15 March.

The SAPS said in a statement that they can confirm none of its members deployed in Braamfontein had fired any shots during the said protests. “However, in an effort to disperse volatile crowds, only a smoke grenade was used in one incident and water cannons in others,” read the statement.

The police service added that this matter has not been officially reported to the SAPS, making it difficult to ascertain the nature of the student’s injuries as well as the circumstances under which the injuries were sustained.

“Police are looking forward to interviewing the student as well as obtaining the medical report regarding this matter,” concluded the statement.
