Matches to only resume in January for Pirates Cricket Club

GREENSIDE – The club features three Saturday and three Sunday league teams, including a team in the Premier League, CGL's strongest league.

Pirates Cricket Club will only start matches again in January next year, after receiving word from Central Gauteng Lions (CGL) that that is when the next club cricket season will kick off properly.

However, it is hoped that pre-season training sessions can resume from October, if the green light is given by CGL and government.

“Everything is still at a standstill in club cricket and we want to make sure we are compliant with all regulations before opening again,” explained the club’s chairperson, Mlungisi Nkosi.

“If we start training in October it will be in smaller groups. We are still studying the policies for cricket under lockdown and we are planning ahead. In the early training we will focus on fitness to ensure there are no injuries to the players after a long break of not playing.”

He said through the fitness training, players will slowly get back in shape and then only afterwards bat, bowl and field seriously.

“I would even suggest that everyone should work on their fitness at this time, not just cricketers. Run around your neighbourhood. It is good for your health and well-being, which is important right now,” Nkosi added.

“Pirates Cricket Club has a junior section for players five to 14 years old, and we have senior cricket for those 13 and 14 upwards. I would encourage the community to join up – the more the merrier. You do not have to be perfect at the game, we will find a team for you.”

There is also a subsection of the club called The Rottens, which hosts social cricket games for people of any ability.

The juniors play day/night matches every week.

Competitively, the club features three Saturday and three Sunday league teams, including a team in the Premier League, CGL’s strongest league.

“It is a good time to join the club. Our head coach, Kerren St Clair is doing well and our numbers are always going up. We came fifth in the Premier League and seventh in the Presidents League last year and we will try to win every league we compete in, in the next season.”
