Saturday afternoon shoot-out between suspected car thieves and Parkview police

PARKVIEW – The vehicle also contained two vehicle jammers, a crowbar, housebreaking and car breaking implements and different car keys.

Three suspects have been shot dead and another arrested after a shoot-out with local police. Members of the Parkview Police Station were involved in a shoot-out on 25 July at Loch Avenue and Napier Road in Parktown.

Early reports online suggested that the incident was sparked after two police officers patrolling Gleneagles Road near Emmarentia spotted the three individuals attempting to steal a vehicle. Spokesperson for the station Captain Tintswalo Sibeko stated, “It is alleged that Parkview members were patrolling in Greenside when they spotted men attempting to steal a Toyota Quantum. One of the suspects were in the middle of the road pointing a firearm towards the police, the suspects jumped inside their car and drove away.”

Sibeko explained that a shoot-out between the police and the suspects ensued and three suspects were shot while a 36-year-old man who was wounded was arrested. “An ambulance was called and the paramedics declared the three suspects dead. The arrested suspect was in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, and not injured.” Through further investigation, it was discovered that the suspects were driving in a vehicle with false registration numbers.

The vehicle also contained two vehicle jammers, a crowbar, housebreaking and car breaking implements and different car keys. Sibeko concluded they are currently investigating a case of attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
