Dabulamanzi Canoe Club members paddle in their swimming pools during the lockdown

Dabulamanzi chairperson, Graham Neate said club members have been keeping fit by running, lifting weights and using paddle ergometers.

Canoeists have not found it easy to be off the water for so long during the lockdown, and some have found inventive ways to continue their sport at home.

Dabulamanzi Canoe Club members Mark Garden and Steve Smith, amonth others, have paddled their canoes in swimming pools, keeping the canoes from speeding off by attaching the ends of the canoe to rope. Derrick Levin has a canoe, which he has practised with at home, but he has also made a contraption resembling a canoe and its paddles, like a homemade paddle ergometer.

This with a wooden board, straps, seat and a pole for a paddle, which was connected to a pulley and weight to act as resistance for his paddling.

Dabulamanzi chairperson, Graham Neate said club members have been keeping fit by running, lifting weights and using paddle ergometers.

“Canoeing South Africa has approached governement with recommendations on how clubs will open safely when they can, and I am optimistic that we could open within the next few days even,” Neate said.”Canoeing is a safe sport, in terms of catching a virus from someone else, and people need the exercise.”

Neate encouraged anyone interested to contact the club about taking up the sport when legislation allows it.Details: Dabulamanzi Canoe Club info@dabulanzico.za; 083 440 3349.
